Unraveled Wednesday, 4/5/23.

Joining Kat and her merry band of Unravelers. Go see what the others are up to.

Knitting.

On the left is how the scarf currently OTN looked back on February 8. Well, I completely lost my knitting mojo during the knee recovery, found myself only able to knit a row or two at a time. I just regained that mojo a few days ago. The photo on the right shows the current state of the scarf and the smallish bit of skein #2 that is left. When that is gone, scarf is done and dusted. Which is good because Amanda will be here for a brief visit in a couple weeks.

Reading.

I apologize for the misalignment below. WordPress was absolutely uncooperative last night. But you guys are smart enough to figure out which review goes with which cover, right?

as

40 Acres Deep by Michael Perry. Perry is an almost-local author, residing <100 miles south of here. This is his latest book, and it will stay with me for a long time. It is the story of an aged farmer slowly losing everything one winter. The link takes you to the author’s website where he talks about writing this one. 5✭

The Candy House by Jennifer Egan. I am not as enamored as the critics over Egan’s books, although I do enjoy reading them. Ditto this one. I think I shall give up on this author. 3✭

as

Milked: How an American Crisis Brought Together Midwestern Dairy Farmers and Mexican Workers / Ruth Conniff. This author will speak at the 7th Congressional District Democratic convention at the end of this month, and I wanted to read her book first. The WI dairy farmers and the Mexican workers formed surprisingly strong bonds, with the WI farmers traveling to Mexico to meet their workers’ families and see the houses that the workers built with their earnings. 4✭

as

as

as

Half Way to You / Jennifer Gold. I barely remember reading this one. Either it was completely forgettable or I wasn’t paying attention when I read it. A podcaster tracks down a reclusive author and interviews her. Discovers unknown connection to author. 3✭

as

as

It Ends with Us / Colleen Hoover. I suspect many of you have also read this one. Ms. Hoover currently has five (5!) books on the NYT bestseller list. The first half of the book is a romance novel, but the second half kicks butt. 4✭

The Quantum Spy / David Ignatius. I knew David Ignatius as a WaPo reporter and columnist who, I remembered, was critical of t***p early in his presidency; not sure exactly how accurate my memory it, though. Anyway, when I saw that he has published multiple novels, principally suspense, I had to check one out. Only halfway through, but it seems to be a rather good one. 3.5✭

Listening.

as

Local Woman Missing / Mary Kubica. I started this one before the knee replacement, probably back in January or early February, and yesterday I was finally alone in the car long enough to listen again. Trying very hard to remember the names of the characters and who they are in the plot. I am five hours in, seven to go.

Watching.

Call the Midwife on Netflix. This is a fallback viewing when I don’t have a current favorite. Such a good show!

I am so happy your Knitting Mojo has returned, that scarf will be delightful on a grey winter day!

I am reading a book that I think you will love… Ed Yong’s An Immense World. It is a fascinating look at senses and nature!

  2. Ellen D. says:

I always enjoy “Call the Midwife”. They cover so many issues that are still current today.
Congrats on getting your new Wisconsin Supreme Court justice! Hope you will see some changes that are needed in Wisconsin!

  3. Kym says:

That scarf is just lovely, Kat. And such a perfect give for Amanda. (I think of her often.) XO And I agree with you: I am not as enamored with Jennifer Egan as the critics either. (And I didn’t even try Candy House. . . )

  4. Vera says:

Your scarf is beautiful. Glad you are back to knitting. I reda “Manhattan Beach” by Egan but that was it…won’t bother with her other books. I’ve added “Forty Acres Deep” to my TBR list.

  5. The scarf looks great! I’ve seen IT ENDS WITH US around, but haven’t read it. It doesn’t seem my preferred kind of book.

  6. Vicki says:

I love your scarf! The colors are so pretty.

I just finished an audiobook and wondered what I might listen to next… despite having a long list to choose from, FORTY ACRES DEEP immediately jumped to the #1 spot. I’ve always enjoyed Michael Perry’s work. Thank you!

  7. highlyreasonable says:

I’m glad to hear that your knitting and reading mojo have returned. 40 Acres Deep and Milked sound interesting, timely, and educational. And I believe congratulations are in order for your WI Supreme Court election. This was wonderful news to wake up to!

  8. gayle says:

Gorgeous scarf! It looks like a rainbow folded into a cloud.
Adding Forty Acres Deep to my reading list. (And gloriosky that list is getting long…)
I tried one of Hoover’s books as an audiobook and got well past halfway before the ‘are we there yet? are we THERE yet? are we there YET?’ kicked in and I returned it to the library. Not sure if I’m up for trying another.

  9. Jane says:

The scarf is very pretty. I’m glad your knee surgery recovering is progressing enough that you feel like knitting. I am another reader who is not a Jennifer Egan fan.
