Furry Friday, a PSA.

As much fun as all the fireworks are for humans, dogs would prefer to skip the whole explosive scene and simply hang out with their people. Here are some tips to make the Fourth a bit less stressful for your dog this year.

In our house we have doggy Valium from the vet, the administration of which generally causes our noise-sensitive dog(s) to take a nap and miss the whole thing. Percy the Pit Bull and Milady the Serene require the Valium; Misha the Formerly Shy Dog and the two cats couldn’t care less about the ka-booms.

Here is fifteen minutes relaxing music for your pup.

Those doggies in head phones… oh my goodness are they cute!

If they’d limit it to just the Fourth, I’d be happy. The %*(& firecrackers have been going off for over a week already, day and night. Last night they started with the cherry bombs.

So far this year, our town has been quieter than usual. Even the guy with the shooting range in his backyard has been silent. Usually we get random boom booms for the two weeks leading up to the 4th.

Bach flower remedies has a rescue remedy for pets; Perelandra also has a remedy for pets who are frightened by the noise. We bought both. I would inject a dropper full into the side of his mouth. We bought a Thunder Vest for our dog to swaddle him. It was fitted tightly around him, and that calmed him down. We would hold him as well to soothe his shaking. We would first have to find him in a thunderstorm. Once, he was hidden behind some clothes that hung low to the floor in the closet. Another time, we found him crouched in the farthest corner of our basement. He would not ever respond to his name being called. I felt so bad for him. Then one year during a bad thunderstorm, he remained sleeping on the couch. That is when we understood that he had gone deaf in his old age.

  5. I could do without the boom booms, too. We were “joking” this year about how many fires the local fireworks would start. Sigh.
